ESPN.com’s Craig Custance recently noted a Yandle-for-Ryan O’Reilly swap with the Colorado Avalanche has made the rounds. O’Reilly could make a good replacement for Vermette, as he’s younger, can play center or wing, possesses a better skill set and would be a fair return for Yandle. Though he carries an annual cap hit of $6 million, it’s only slightly more expensive than Yandle’s salary, and would be offset by the expected departure of Vermette.
The problem, however, is O’Reilly – like Yandle – is also eligible for UFA status in 2016. He also has a history of contentious contract negotiations. It could take a lengthy deal worth well over $7 million per season to re-sign him, as well as a major sell job to convince him to stake his long-term future with the rebuilding Coyotes.
